The Hamilton County Department of Education lost a valued supporter and student advocate Sunday when longtime school board member Debra Matthews passed away.
“I was very sad to hear of Ms. Matthews passing. She was a tremendous asset to the board and she will be missed greatly,” said Superintendent Dr. Jim Scales. “Ms. Matthews was a strong advocate for doing what was right for all students. She will be remembered as a champion for children.”
Ms. Matthews, 58, served on the school board for 10 years and held a Master’s Degree in Education from Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.
The school board vacancy created by Ms. Matthews’ passing will be filled in accordance with board policy.
