NIGHTFALL CONCERT SERIES STARTS THIS FRIDAY
By Contributed Article
The Nightfall Concert Series begins its 23rd season of great summer musical programming for 16 weeks, starting this Friday, May 28, with a headline show by Big Sam’s Funky Nation. The opening act is The Micks. These FREE shows are held each Friday on the BlueCross Stage at Miller Plaza, from May 28 through September 24.
Presented by the River City Company, and produced by Chattanooga Presents, Nightfall continues to bring an eclectic mix of rock, blues, jazz, world music, funk, bluegrass and folk music to Downtown Chattanooga. Nightfall will keep its commitment to the local arts community by featuring Chattanooga musicians for each opening act, beginning at 7 PM, followed by performances by national and international talent beginning at 8 PM. Beer, wine, food and non-alcoholic drink concessions are available on site. No outside food or beverages are allowed.
For the past several years, Big Sam has been a driving force of urban funk. The band is led by trombone powerhouse Big Sam Williams, formerly of the Dirty Dozen Brass Band, who the San Francisco Chronicle calls “the top man on the slide trombone in the birthplace of jazz.” The distinct honor of Best Funk Group of 2008 was awarded to Big Sam’s Funk Nation at the 2009 Big Easy Music Awards.
