Girls Inc. announces Girls Blast Off fall fundraiser

By Contributed Article

On October 6th, Girls Incorporated of Chattanooga will blast off into a new endeavor and direction. The annual fall fundraiser will now incorporate programs conducted by the girls and ALL funds raised will be used to support math, science and technology programs.

Why math, science and technology? Recent national surveys indicate that today’s, and tomorrow’s, employment will lie heavily in the math, science and technology fields. Gone are the traditional means of “work.” High-tech careers are the way of the future. Employment of women in high-tech careers is lagging among their male counterparts. As a community it is our responsibility to encourage young women in these fields and build their confidence to explore these subject areas as potential careers. The more we expose young girls and women to math, science and technology in non-intimidating manners, the more success we have to affect a change not only on a local but on a regional and national level.

Since 1961 Girls Inc. has served over 22,000 girls between the ages of 6 to 18 years old in the greater Chattanooga area. Girls Inc. mission is to inspire all girls to be strong, smart and bold by providing a healthy and positive environment where girls can enjoy being girls.

A fundraiser to assist in the purchase of equipment to support these programs, Comcast Presents Girls Inc. Blasts Off, will be held Friday, October 6th at the Creative Discovery Museum from 6 – 8 p.m. The girls will perform science experiments learned at the 2006 science summer camp. A silent and live auction will be held. Chattanooga area restaurants will provide hors d’oeurves. Tickets are $50/person.

Area businesses helping aid Girls Inc. in raising funds for these programs include: Thinking Media; Double Cola; EPB; Henderson, Hutcherson & McCullough, PLLC; Soloff Properties, Inc.; AirNet Group, Inc.; Ameriprise Financial; Brock Insurance Agency, Inc.; Cherokee Truck & Equipment, LLC; Shaw Industries; Creative Discovery Museum; Diversified Printing; Hamilton Liquors; Market Street Design and Signs By Tomorrow. To find out how you can help the girls or to purchase tickets call Laurie Shipley, VP of development, at ext. 107 or email at . You can truly make a difference in a girl’s life.
