Caring – Character Trait for December
By Contributed Article
Fifth graders at Nolan Elementary showed the true meaning of December’s character trait - Caring!
Instead of exchanging gifts with each other at their annual Christmas party, students chose to put the money on what gifts they would have bought for their classmates to better use. In conjunction with the Candlelighters Family Support Group, the students donated $410.00 towards purchasing Christmas presents for a child who is battling cancer.
The Candlelighters Family Support Group is affiliated with the Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, a national support group that is committed to the mission of providing support, education and advocacy for children and adolescents with cancer, survivors of childhood/adolescent cancer, their families and the professionals who care for them. The local support group president is Jane Kaylor. This group provides Candlelighters publications, support group meetings, financial assistance, chapter newsletter, in-hospital visits, and family activities.
Each year, the fifth grade teachers at Nolan Elementary School team up with Tommie Erwin from the Candlelighters Group to help make Christmas brighter for a child who is going through cancer treatment. This year’s wish list included a wagon, learning games such as a Leap Frog, a musical chair, a teddy bear, puzzles, clothes and pajamas and gift cards to local stores. Susan Martinez, Mrs. Fain’s homeroom mom, purchased the items on behalf of the students and presented them to Mrs. Erwin, Dec. 14th at Nolan Elementary.
