Go Green Giants!!!!

By
sigmtn.com staff writer

The Signal Mountain “Green Giants” Swim Team is looking forward to a great season. The Green Giants are the reigning 2005 Chattanooga Area Swim League (CASL) champions. The swim team is for children and teens through high school age and must be no older than 19 on June 1st to qualify for competition. Athletes must register with the Town of Signal Mountain and pay any additional fees as required by the Town of Signal Mountain before joining the team. The Green Giants Swim Team is not part of the Town of Signal Mountain. It just happens to use its pool. Registration was held in May, however, according to League co-president, Tracy McHugh, athletes can register after the season opens.

Swimming coaches this year are Doug Hamm, head coach and Will Hunt, assistant coach. Diving coaches are John Bonds, head coach and Deborah Mynatt as his assistant. The Green Giants are in the Blue Division of the CASL and will swim against four other teams, Colonial Shores, Dalton, Ringgold, and Stuart Heights. Home meets this month will be held June 8th, June 15th, June 19th, and June 29th. They begin at 5:30 pm and visitors are welcome.

Each season the swim team participates in two special meets. The first is the Developmental Meet, which will be held June 24th at the Signal Mountain Pool. This is a very important meet that is designed for beginning swimmers only. “It is their chance to shine,” according to Tracy McHugh. Over 300 athletes from as many as sixteen teams are represented at this meet. It is an important event for the entire community, as it welcomes visitors to shop, eat, and sightsee while on our mountaintop. The second special event the Green Giants participate in is the annual City Meet, which will be held in July at Baylor School. This is a two-day event that culminates the season.

The 2006 Signal Mountain Swim Club Board consists of: Co-presidents, Tracy McHugh and Janet Pickett; Vice-president/Developmental Meet Director, Luanne Culpepper; Co-Vice-president, Elissa Clark; Co-Treasurers, Sybil Weldon and Connie Brown; Registrars, Leigh Althaus and Stephanie Sawyer; and Pool Rep, Jay Cooper. In addition, there over 20 other Swim Club Leaders holding various volunteer positions. “Swimming is a people-intensive sport that takes coaches, timers, judges, runners, and record keepers, among others,” according to the Swim Team Handbook. Therefore there are many other volunteers helping to make this experience a learning and growing one for all the children on the team. In addition, Head Coach Doug Hamm has eight people on his staff assisting him.

For more information on the Chattanooga Area Swim League, check out their web site at www.chattanoogaswim.com. There you will find a list of meet schedules and pool locations as well as league standings. Our mountaintop community is fortunate to have such an organization available for our children. I think the community joins me in wishing the Green Giants all the best in their 2006 season. Go Green Giants…..
