80th Anniversary of the Historic Signal Mountain Grammar School

By
MACC Director

Because of the significant role that this historic building has played in the community, the MACC will be hosting an 80th birthday celebration. This will be a wonderful opportunity to reminisce and see what this building has provided for the community in both the past and the present, and what it holds for the future.

History of Signal Mountain Grammar School: Signal Mountain Grammar School, erected in 1926, was the answer to the growing need for a formal educational facility on the southern tip of Signal Mountain. The town that it served was chartered in 1919 after Charles James developed a burgeoning resort community just several years earlier. Preceding public and religious buildings, Signal Mountain Grammar School was the meeting place for both civic and religious groups and housed the first library on Signal Mountain.

History of MACC: In May of 1999, Signal Mountain Grammar School closed
its doors after 72 years of providing education for children of Signal Mountain. Just prior to the closing of the school, in the fall of 1998, a group of dedicated community members began a movement to preserve the historic landsite.
With support from the Hamilton County Board of Education and Signal Mountain Town Council, plans developed to use the building as a place where artists could work and teach..... a place where the community could gather for meetings and special events. The success of this endeavor has resulted in a thriving arts enrichment program and meeting place for the community. MACC is the only public building on Signal Mountain that serves as broad and diverse a purpose.

MACC - An Arts Center: The Mountain Arts Community Center (MACC), formerly recognized as Signal Mountain Grammar School, is the place where creativity and the arts flourish on Signal Mountain. Budding musicians practicing scales, potters throwing at the wheel, adults exploring the intricacies of watercolor for the first time, and 5 year olds embarking on a journey into the world of dance and movement are just a sampling of what you might see at the MACC. A wide array of classes is offered year-round for children and adults alike.
