Professional Disc Golf Comes to Chattanooga!

By Contributed Article

The “2006 Grapevine Classic” Disc (Frisbee) Golf Tournament held in Chattanooga on Saturday, March 25th at the “Sinks” Disc Golf Course was a huge success! The Professional Disc Golf Association (PDGA) Tour came to Chattanooga as the Grapevine & the Chattanooga Flying Disc Club hosted the city's first PDGA sanctioned event. This tournament drew players from 32 cities and 6 states as well as players from as far away as Orangeburg, SC and Oxford, MS. Tennessee’s top Pro and Amateur players competed for money and prizes in this 2-round, one-day event.

Top notched Pro and Amateur players in this year’s event represented over 100 players, 52 from the Chattanooga Metropolitan area and 48 players from out of town including six states.

This Tournament was played one year from the opening of the first Disc Golf course built by the Chattanooga Flying Disc Golf Club with the help of local sponsors. Located off Access Road in Hixson near the soccer complex, this course is known as "The Sinks" due to the sink holes found in and around the land when building the course.

Winners for this year's 2006 GRAPEViNE CLASSIC in each division include:

Pro Open Division - The tight and wooded course created challenges for even the best of players with the best first round score of 59 (-4) shot by our newest local Pro Mark Cole, and Kingsport, TN’s world class Pro Tim (Tic-Tac) Owston. In round two, local course knowledge assisted Chattanooga’s Jake Nye and Knoxville’s Kris Orrick to shoot hot rounds of 56 (-7) to boost them to the top of their divisions.

Pro Masters Division (40 & older) - Vic Vicars of Kingsport, TN came back after a slow start to strong shot a 60 (-3) in his final to beat out Chattanooga’s Mark Cole with David Hirsch of Tucker, GA, coming in third place.

Advanced Men’s Division - Trevor Dehmlow from Brentwood, TN was late and stepped out of his car and on to the course with no warm ups and never having played the course and shot a 64 (+1) first round and followed it up with a hot 60 (-3) second round to beat the competition by 6 stroke with an amazing performance of Disc control. Placing second was Joe Edmonds from Livingston,TN, and third place went to Brian Howard of Harrison, TN.

Advanced Masters - Dana Lanahan of Murfreesboro, TN came out with a strong first round of (+2) and followed it up by shooting a 63 (Even) second round to win his Division by 10 strokes. Second place went to Scott Homberg Ringgold, GA, who also served as this year's tournament chairman for the Chattanooga Flying Disc Club. Third place went to Jim Lujan Chattanooga, TN.

Intermediate Men’s Division - Two young teenagers took on the biggest division of 42 players to Tie for 1st, but Will Schusterick from Knoxville,TN beat out Nick Phillups of Chattanooga in a sudden death play off. Crawford Stevener of Nashville, TN, placed third.

Women’s Division - After the second round, Chattanooga’s Jenn Grymes and Patti Russell were all tied up, and went 3 holes before a winner was decided in this very close match. Coming in third was Christi Griffin of Marietta, GA.
