Signal Place Historic District (Old Towne) November Newsletter

By

This newsletter is to bring you up-to-date since our social in early June at the Kelly?s. Our thanks to them and to Jane Benton for planning this party. Please read each section carefully and mark your calendars.

I.The Robert Whites of Marrcrest will open their home to us for a Christmas Season Cocktail Supper as a fundraising effort to purchase street lamps for a more distinctive entrance to our historic area. The cost of $25 per person
will cover dinner with wine and beer included. We hope to have a string quartet and a silent auction for Christmas shopping. Members of the Old Towne Association will receive invitations. Please respond promptly; we hope many will want to attend, but 100 guests may be all we can accommodate. Please call Marian at 6498 if you would like to be on the committee. If you are not a member, contact Jane Benton at 1293.
Sunday, December 2, 6 ? 8 p.m., coat and tie. Invitations to follow.

II.The Street Lamps ? the beautification committee hopes to install attractive street lamps with banners and landscaping at the base in two areas: Texas Point at James and in green space at Mississippi Avenue at Maryland. We are obtaining estimates and town approval. The positive outcomes are improved designation of our historic region and better lighting. The more we do to make our area attractive and identifiable, the more value we add to our own homes. We will undertake a fundraising campaign to help with this project, and any major contributors will have special acknowledgement. We hope that each homeowner will contribute at least $10.00 to this. Please remember most subdivisions require homeowners to contribute more than that sum to maintain entrances.

III.Notecards ? We hope to offer notecards of our well for sale at the Christmas gathering. Jo Kellum has taken a photograph of the well in summer. These cards will make great gifts, and our fellow neighbor Pris has indicated an interest in selling them for us at The Grapevine.

IV.About the Banners ? Unfortunately two of our banners were taken the first two days they were on display. Surely, the theft was a silly prank, but these custom-made banners cost $70.00 a piece. If they could reappear in the mailbox of 107 Louisiana Avenue?no questions asked?that would be great. Luckily the American flags were not taken. Now the plan is to install flagpoles on the telephone poles on James Boulevard so that the one block along the tracks can be decked out with the spring banners from April until we put up the American flags from Memorial Day through Flag Day. Having to do this will require a great deal more work, but we can at least enjoy the festive flair they offer and, with luck, foil the pranksters.

V.About the Poles ? First, thanks to John Glass, scoutmaster, and Joe and Henry Cooper for installing them. We would like to sell these at $25 a piece. They would be great for displaying flags in your own gardens. It was the proximity to the street that abetted the theft. The hooks can be adapted to commercial flags.

VI.The plaque for the Bentons is ready to be mounted. Please look in the old trolley stop.

VII.Garden Tour ? we will plan one for next May 5.

VIII.Final Update - By now you may realize that one of our American flags was stolen from its pole at the Texas intersection. I thank those of you who mentioned to me how glad you were to see the flags out at this tragic time in our history. I felt it was important for our community to show patriotism even though the flags were jeopardized. I did learn that if a flag cannot be flown at half mast as required, then a black streamer should be added.

In Short:

Christmas Party December 2 ? a check payable to Old Towne Home-Garden Projects will be your RSVP to the invitation
