The Welcome Mat - Newcomers of Signal Mountain Newsletter

MESSAGE FROM THE CO-DIRECTORS

Happy New Year Everyone! We hope you had a very happy holiday and are looking forward to an exciting new year with Newcomers.

We would like to thank all the people who participated in all of the Newcomers Holiday festivities. Mimi and Uwe Abels were such gracious hosts of our annual Christmas party. Their house was decorated head to toe with holiday cheer. Fun was definitely had by all!

A huge thank you goes out to Allie Levine and the Fundraising Committee for all of the very hard work they put into the Holiday Celebration and the Tree Lighting Ceremony. What had the potential of being a very Charlie Brown Christmas (the first tree delivered was no more than 5 ft. high) turned into a spectacular night for the kids and parents of Signal Mountain. Thank you to all of those who baked goodies for the bake sale but we especially want to thank Wendy & Michael Hagen, Jeannie & Bob Nolan, Paul Gable, Nancy McCaffrey, Elizabeth Stewart, Courtney Armstrong, Heather Murphy, Teresa Marshall, Jayme Upton, Arlina Hensley, Velinda DeForge and the Physical Therapy students of UTC, for all of their help during the celebration. We couldn’t have pulled it off without you.

As mentioned, we have an exciting set of programs lined up for 2002! We will kick it off on Tuesday, January 15 with some lively banter from WRCB morning co-anchor, Jed Mescon, and meteorologist Thom Benson, two Signal Mountain residents. Upcoming months will include programs on exercise, managing your money, spring plantings, and more.

So get into the swing of the new year by joining us on January 15th!

BABYSITTING
Babysitting is available during our monthly meetings/ luncheon from 9:30a.m. – 1:30 p.m. for $3/hr for one child and $1/hr for each additional child (cash only please). Signal Mountain Baptist Church graciously allows us to use their nursery but requires that all children be able to walk (infants and pre-walkers are welcome at the meeting). Make reservations by calling Arlina Hensley () by the Friday before the meeting. To ensure that the nursery is adequately staffed for your child’s safety, reservations are required. You may call later to see if openings are still available. Remember to bring drinks, snacks, and lunch for your child if you will be attending the luncheon.

Fundraising News
Let us begin with an update regarding our Holiday Festival and tree lighting. It was a terrific turn-out and a huge success! We were able to lay the groundwork for a really great event that will only grow to be bigger and better with each year. Thank you to everyone who helped us out. We appreciate your hard work and you all deserve a pat on the back for a terrific job!

The cookbook committee has extended the deadline for recipes through January. Please bring copies of your favorite recipes to our next meeting. We are planning on hosting the tasting luncheon in February and the rough draft should be sent to the publisher in March.

And finally, with the stress of the holiday rush a mere memory, we need to begin work on the Silent Auction. We will be asking anyone who has not yet completed their volunteer commitments to be joining an auction committee. We have jobs to fit into anyone’s busy schedule and are willing to work with you on finding the right job. More on this at our next meeting.

If you have any questions regarding the cookbook or auction, please contact Allie Levine at or e-mail her at . Thanks and have a wonderful New Year!

Also, we need a Programming Chairperson to begin coordinating the meeting programs. Only 3 months remain so here’s your chance to plan meetings around topics and celebrities of your choice!
