Beginner’s Bridge Class at Bachman Community Center

By Contributed Article

Mel Tryon and Bridge Class
An Elementary Bridge class will be offered at Bachman Community Center, 2815 Anderson Pike, beginning on Monday, September 11th. The classes will be conducted every Monday evening from 7:00 to 9:00pm for 9 weeks. The class will consist of one hour of instruction followed by one hour of play. The cost of the class will be $5 per session.

Mel Tryon, who has over 20 years playing experience, will teach the course. He has taught both Beginning and Intermediate Bridge classes at Bachman. “This class is challenging and fun,” says Mel. “It will introduce the game to people who have been interested in learning to play bridge but haven’t been able to get around to it.” Learning within a classroom environment at Bachman is convenient and relaxing while providing an opportunity to build a solid understanding of basic bidding and card playing technique.

This class is not just for people new to the game. It is very helpful for those who have played bridge in the past but would like a refresher course in the fundamentals before starting to play again. It also will help anyone who is currently playing social bridge but is interested in learning more about the game. This is a great place to find out what you might be doing wrong, how you can do it better, or simply to improve your understanding of the bidding process. For current players, it will increase their enjoyment of the game by improving both their communication and card playing skills.

The course will use Shirley Silverman’s student text, the best-selling bridge teaching series over the past 25 years. Each student will receive their own text, which they can use as a reference source long after the classes have ended. The course includes: the fundamentals of evaluating and re-evaluating your hand, suit and no-trump bidding, penalty and takeout doubles, scoring, and commonly used bidding conventions.

The focus of this class is having fun while learning the fundamentals of the game. Bridge is an educational and social activity for young and old. Come join us at the Bachman Community Center. The minimum enrollment to conduct the class will be two tables. Please call Nancy Urban at the Community Center, , to enroll before September 6th.
